"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" has officially been written off as a loss for MGM, according to MGM Holdings CEO Gary Barber.
Barber said the film has fallen "below our expectations and we booked a modest loss." He went on to say that they "were hoping we'd do 10% more than we did." The film has earned $231 million, and that wouldn't be too bad if the film hadn't cost so much. At $90 million, the film was rather costly considering the genre was an adult mystery thriller film.
The cost could affect the progress of the other two films in the franchise. If they are made, the budget will likely be trimmed down substantially.
